Carpi is now a registered trademark of Agrosuperior S.A., marketed through the Abonos Superior division since 1955.
The company Fratelli Giacomo & Luigi Carpi was founded in 1904 in Poviglio (Reggio Emilia), Italy, by brothers Giacomo and Luigi Carpi, who ventured into the design, manufacturing, and distribution of agricultural spraying equipment. For forty-four years, they were known as F.lli Giacomo & Luigi Carpi.
In 1948, the company changed its name to Carpi Officine Meccaniche S.p.A. when the Italian Federation of Agricultural Consortia (FEDERCONSORZI) acquired a majority stake in the company. By that time, the second generation of the Carpi family, Engineer Albino Carpi and Dr. Giacomo Carpi, were running the organization as partners.
The first contact between Carpi and Abonos Superior was established in 1954 when one of our founding partners, Raúl Gurdián Montealegre, visited the Carpi headquarters during his vacation in Italy. This visit led to a solid business relationship, and Abonos Superior began selling the first Carpi equipment in Costa Rica and throughout Central America.
On October 10, 1988, the company was transformed into a limited liability company (Carpi Officine Meccaniche S.r.l.). At that time, the shareholding was as follows: Italian Federation of Agricultural Consortia (FEDECONSORZI) with 59.24%, Engineer Albino Carpi with 32.53%, and Dr. Giacomo Carpi with 8.23%.
At that time, approximately 60% of its sales were made in Italy through its distribution partner Federconsortile (Consorzi Agrari Provinciali). The rest of the revenue was distributed as follows: 5% in Europe, 11% in Africa, 2% in Asia, 21% in Central America (invoiced by Abonos Superior), and 1% in Oceania.
By 1991, FEDECONSORZI (Carpi's majority shareholder) faced financial and administrative issues, which were classified as the largest post-war scandal in Italy, leading to bankruptcy. This situation affected Officine Carpi, and on July 30, 1993, Carpi Officine Meccaniche Srl declared bankruptcy.
In the bankruptcy process, the appointed liquidator auctioned off the company’s iconic building in Poviglio, and being unable to face the numerous advances made by Abonos Superior (then part of the Corporación Superior group) for the purchase of Carpi products, the liquidator, through judicial authorization, granted a private purchase agreement that included movable assets such as finished and manufactured equipment, technical data, molds, spare parts and their codification, designs, and partially the trademarks to Abonos Superior S.A. for 99% (since there was a law preventing foreigners from owning 100% of an Italian company) and 1% to Engineer Albino Carpi.
On August 5, 1993, the Italian company Officine Carpi Srl was established, and on November 28, 1993, Engineer A. Carpi and his nephew Adriano ‘Lelio’ Sistici, along with Abonos Superior S.A., contributed their talent and intellectual property for the manufacturing, distribution, and sale of CARPI brand equipment and spare parts.
In the same year, Abonos Superior began producing Carpi pumps at its plant in La Lima de Cartago, Costa Rica, using raw materials and finished parts from Italy. The Spray-Mec model, among others, has been manufactured and marketed in Costa Rica to this day.
Officine Carpi Srl operated in Poviglio (Reggio Emilia), Italy, until 2023, when Abonos Superior - Agrosuperior S.A. Division decided to relocate its commercial activities to Costa Rica to serve the American and international markets.

(Limited Company) when the Italian Federation of Agricultural Consortia (FEDERCONSORZI) acquired a majority stake in the company. By this time, the second generation of the Carpi family, cousins, Engineer Albino Carpi and Dr. Giacomo Carpi, had joined the company and owned the remaining shares.
The connection between Carpi and Abonos Superior was established in 1954 when one of our founding partners, Gurdián Montealegre, discovered the equipment manufactured by Carpi Officine Meccaniche S.p.A. during his honeymoon in Italy, one year after the creation of Abonos Superior. This discovery led to a business relationship, and Abonos Superior began selling the first Carpi equipment in Costa Rica and throughout Central America.

At that time, approximately 60% of its revenue came from Italy, 85% of which depended on sales made by the Federconsortile agricultural consortium (Consorzi Agrari Provinciali), to whom CARPI had entrusted exclusive distribution of the brand in Italy. The rest of the revenue was distributed as follows: 5% in Europe, 11% in Africa, 2% in Asia, 21% in Central America (invoiced by Abonos Superior), and 1% in Oceania.
By 1991, FEDECONSORZI (Carpi's majority shareholder) faced financial problems due to mismanagement, which was labeled the largest post-war scandal in Italy, ultimately leading to bankruptcy. This situation put Officine Carpi in a difficult position, and on July 30, 1993, Carpi Officine Meccaniche Srl declared bankruptcy. In the bankruptcy process, the assigned liquidator auctioned off the company’s iconic building in Poviglio, and being unable to face the numerous advances made by Abonos Superior (at that time part of the Corporación Superior group) for the purchase of Carpi products, the liquidator, through judicial authorization, granted a private purchase agreement (the movable assets, including "all remaining company assets, including designs, technical data... the trademark, spare part codifications, etc., all as a whole…) to Abonos Superior S.A. Furthermore, 99% of the company's shares (there was a law preventing foreigners from owning 100% of an Italian company, leaving Engineer Albino Carpi as a symbolic partner with 1%) were transferred to Abonos Superior S.A. (Corporación Superior). Eight days later (August 5, 1993), the Italian company Officine Carpi SrL was established, to which Abonos Superior S.A. granted a concession and license agreement on November 28, 1993, for the manufacturing, distribution, and sale of CARPI brand equipment and spare parts.
In the same year, Abonos Superior transferred the brand to Costa Rica and began producing Carpi pumps at its plant in La Lima de Cartago, using raw materials and finished parts from Italy. The Spray-Mec model, among others, has been manufactured and marketed in Costa Rica up to this day.
